🧪 Diagram of the chemical structure of watch glasses

1. Mineral glass

  • Composition : Mainly silica (SiO₂) with fluxes such as sodium (Na₂O) and calcium (CaO).

  • Structure : Amorphous, non-crystalline vitreous network, offering good transparency and moderate scratch resistance.

2. Acrylic glass (PMMA)

  • Composition : Polymethyl methacrylate, a thermoplastic polymer.

  • Structure : Linear polymer chains, lightweight and flexible, but susceptible to scratches.

  • Advantage : Easy to mold and repair by polishing.

3. Sapphire crystal

  • Composition : Aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃), crystallized in single crystals.

  • Structure : Very hard hexagonal crystal lattice, with a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale.

  • Advantage : Extremely scratch-resistant, but can break under a violent impact.
